This is my job

In case some of you don't know exactly what I do, I am a Sports page designer for the Daily Herald.

Last weekend we put together our BIG project for the year, which is a Football special section. A 44-page booklet full of information on BYU, Utah, High School and the NFL. Our lead designer, Brandon, and I worked for 3 days straight to get it done.

Brandon had started early on Friday, while I was still doing the normal sections for the paper that comes out every day. It was Saturday when we hit it with all of our might. We came into the office at 9:30 a.m. and worked nearly non-stop until 2:15 a.m. (Sunday morn).
After a quick power nap, I was back at 10 a.m. with a large Mountain Dew in hand. A few dozen pages and many hours later I was headed home at 3 a.m. (monday morning).
Again it was a quick turnaround as our deadline was 5 p.m. Monday afternoon. I got back to office at 9 a.m. and was here until 5:15 p.m.

These are the covers for the different sections (the preps section was divided into parts of the Valley (i.e. only people in Provo saw the Timpview cover)

This is the BYU section. The player's name is Bryan Kehl and he is seated in the BYU Creamery. Our theme throughout the section was "Football and the Community", so each player was photographed in a location that was specific to that city.

This is Utah's Brian Johnson posing at "The Pie" a popular pizza place off Utah's campus.

This is the Pleasant Grove high school cover the location is a burger drive-in called the Purple Turtle.

This is the Orem cover, the location is a mini-golf course called Trafalga.

This is the Provo cover. The player was shot at Seven Peaks waterpark.

This is the Springville cover, shot at the Springville Art Museum.

And last, but certainly not least, our NFL cover. In years past, the NFL cover has not fit in with the rest of the covers becase we have to choose a photo from the Associated Press and photoshop it in a way that makes it sort of fit. This year, we were able to hire a photographer in Miami to take a picture of former BYU quarterback John Beck, who was drafted by the Dolphins in this year's NFL Draft.

We are so proud of this year's special section. We are hoping to win a Top 10 Award for the third time in 4 years (2005 would be the only year missing.)

Anyway, I hope this gives you an insite into what I do all day everyday.

I LOVE MY JOB!!!!
